Overview

Select question:

Is orthodontic treatment important?

Is it important for your teeth to look good, work well and last for a lifetime? Of course it is! Teeth that are well aligned give you the nicest smile, but not only that – straight teeth are easier to clean and maintain and a better bite means better jaw function – so, a healthier you!

Do not underestimate the importance of a nice smile. This is not ‘just cosmetic’. Everyone wants to look their best and for good reason. One of the first things that other people notice about you is your teeth. So, having your teeth straightened to make them ‘look nice’ is a very valid reason.

Do I need to have all my permanent teeth?

No. Many problems can be helped much earlier than that. With some problems, it is critical to begin treatment early, other things can be postponed until teenage years or even later. Children should be seen around age 8 to check for developing difficulties. Early intervention may save time, effort and money over the long haul.

Am I too old for orthodontics?

Are you dead? If not, you are not too old. The appearance and function of your teeth are important your whole life long.

Is there anyone who shouldn't have orthodontic treatment?

Yes. A person who is unwilling to maintain good oral hygiene or is not able to take good care of their appliance should reconsider their objectives.

What will you do at my first appointment?

At your first appointment, we will do a visual examination of your mouth and facial features. We may also take models, x-rays and photos if needed. We will let you know what problems exist, what problems to expect in the future, how the problem developed and what would be required to treat it. We will also discuss the time involved as well as the cost. You may even be able to begin the necessary fitting procedure to get your braces or appliance right away if that is indicated for your situation.

Do I need braces or an appliance?

The science of orthodontics has enjoyed an explosion of new technology in recent years. There are many different kinds of braces and appliances. Your orthodontist can suggest which would work best for you.

Some braces are tooth coloured, others are made of steel and come in different sizes and shapes. Removable appliances can be clear or they can be made in any colour you can imagine.

Some problems are quite simple and require only a few months treatment. Other problems are very complex and could require 2 years or more to complete. Some people respond more quickly to treatment that others so their treatment will not take as long.

Can I have invisible braces?

There is a new technique that uses a series of removable clear aligners or retainers to move teeth. They truly are invisible, but they are not suitable for everyone. Ask your orthodontist if this technique would work well for you.

Do braces (appliances) hurt?

Your mouth is a very sensitive place. Everything new that is put into your mouth takes some time to get used to. There is some mild soreness in your teeth when your braces (appliance) have just been placed. A mild analgesic (pain killer) should help.
